Congratulations to Lisa Minakami and Adrian Martin! |
|
We are pleased to welcome Lisa Minakami and Adrian Martin into the Intermediate class. Thank you both for your dedication to learning the art of taiko! |
Meet the student: Lisa Minakami |
Emeryville Taiko: How long have you been playing taiko?
Lisa Minakami: I started as a complete beginner in January 2007.
ET: What's one thing about it that keeps you coming back?
LM: No matter how difficult or tiring my day has been I know I'll feel happy and energized after class. I also enjoy seeing my classmates!
ET: What else do you do when you don't have bachi in your hands?
LM: I work as a structural engineer at a consulting firm in downtown San Francisco. I've had the opportunity to work on several museums and currently am designing the buildings for a wildlife park in the United Arab Emirates. Outside of work I like to cook, hike, ski, and travel, though I can also be quite a couch potato.
ET: You just recently moved from Beginning 2 to Intermediate level. What are you most looking forward to with that change?
LM: I'm definitely looking forward to learning new songs and drumming styles. I'd also like to work on becoming a more confident and spirited performer.
ET: What's something about you that your fellow students might not know?
LM: I grew up playing the ukulele and flute. I also have an enormous cat named Picasso.

Meigetsu Festival |
In October Emeryville Taiko performed in the 2nd annual Meigetsu (Harvest Moon) Taiko Festival at Dance Mission Theater in San Francisco. Sensei Bruce "Mui" Ghent and Maikaze Daiko hosted the festival, which featured artists from the San Francisco Bay Area performing both traditional and modern taiko, music and dance. As shown in these photos, we enjoyed ourselves tremendously. At the end of the weekend we took a group photo with Grandmaster Seiichi Tanaka of San Francisco Taiko Dojo, who was teacher to both Mr. Ghent and Emeryville Taiko director Susan Horn.
