Kids' classes September 5 through November 21 |
We still have some spaces open in our special 12-class series for kids from 8 to 12 years old! We will accept new students for these classes on October 3rd. Students will learn Hisho (phoenix) Matsuri Daiko, a very energetic and playful song from a children's taiko group in Sakai City, Japan. The series will culminate with a recital on November 21st.
Echo Costanzo (pictured) will be the instructor for this series.
Classes will be held every Saturday from 9:45am to 10:50am. New students will be accepted on the first Saturday of each month and must attend a registration and orientation session at 9:30am before their first class. Each class is $10 plus a one-time $5 registration fee (cash or check only, no debit or credit cards). Multi-class discount cards (5/$45 and 10/$80) are available. Please email (info@etaiko.org) to reserve a space.

Cazadero Family Camp
|
For the last ten years, Emeryville Taiko Sensei Susan Horn has made an annual trek to the Cazadero Performing Arts Family Camp, where talented musicians and performing artists from around the state offer classes in everything from salsa to circus arts to didgeridoo . Susan-san teaches taiko drumming to kids and family members from ages 8 to 85 in two week-long sessions in August. At the end of each session, the children show all they've learned in a performance under the redwoods. This year her groups played the song Masaru, which was taught to us by Kazuaki Tomida from Japan. |
In Susan-san's own words: "Every year at camp something special always happens. This time my students were inspired to dedicate our final performance to Lanier Pruitt. Lanier passed away earlier this year and things were just not the same at camp. He was such a big presence. I explained to my students that when we bring our bachi up to the sky we believe that we are connecting to our ancestors, our Taiko teachers, our friends. We get energy and inspiration from them just as we did when they were living. So at the end of our performance we raised our bachi to the sky and shouted his name, 'Lanier!' I can imagine him grinning, silently."

Solano Stroll
We took over the intersection of Solano and Masonic and managed to get in two and a half shows before the late-afternoon rains forced us to pack it in.
San Francisco Dragon Boat Festival
We enjoyed two sun-drenched afternoons on Treasure Island, sharing the stage with magic, breakdance and hard rock acts.
The show's two emcees were our first audience participants.
